Westfield Teens Lead “Sticker Shock” Campaign to Curb Underage Drinking

This holiday season, Westfield teens took the lead in raising awareness about underage drinking through the “Sticker Shock” campaign. The Westfield Youth Peer Leadership Group partnered with House of Wine & Liquor on North Avenue and ShopRite Wines & Spirits on South Avenue East to remind adults of the legal consequences of providing alcohol to minors.

Bright stickers placed on alcohol products serve as a clear warning: supplying alcohol to anyone under 21 is illegal and can carry penalties of up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.

“The message is stronger when it comes from young people themselves,” said Amy Lewis, Health Educator at the Westfield Regional Health Department and advisor to the group. “Many teens—and even adults—don’t realize minors can also face legal consequences if they help provide alcohol.”

The initiative is part of the Peer Leadership Group’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy choices. Research highlights the importance of early intervention: the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that adults who have their first drink before age 15 are seven times more likely to experience alcohol-related problems than those who wait until 21.

By taking an active role, Westfield teens are sending a clear message: preventing underage drinking is a community responsibility, and awareness—and action—can make a real difference, one sticker at a time.
