SUMMIT SCOUTS COMPLETE ADIRONDACK CANOE EXPEDITION

WHAT BEGAN AS A LAST-MINUTE CHANGE OF PLANS BECAME A MEMORABLE HIGH-ADVENTURE EXPERIENCE.

A crew of six Boy Scouts and two adult leaders from Troop 67 in Summit recently completed a five-day canoe expedition through New York’s Adirondack Park after this summer’s wildfires forced the cancellation of a Northern Tier high-adventure trek in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. The Scouts had spent nearly two years preparing for the trip.
Rather than cancel their summer adventure, the Scouts quickly shifted plans and set out on a wilderness canoe route from Long Lake to Tupper Lake in upstate New York. Carrying their food, camping gear, and personal equipment, they paddled through remote stretches of the Adirondacks and camped along the route.
The trip also included an approximately 10-mile hike through the Cold River Valley and numerous wildlife sightings, including a nesting pair of bald eagles.
Throughout the expedition, the Scouts put their training into practice by navigating, setting up camp, preparing meals, managing equipment, and working together to complete each day’s route.
What began as a last-minute change of plans became a memorable high-adventure experience and a fitting example of the Scout motto:
Be Prepared.
