Exploring CAU’s Impact – Part 4

Community Access Unlimited (CAU) is widely recognized for its dedicated support of individuals with disabilities and youth at risk. Many may not fully realize the groundbreaking and innovative nature of CAU’s programs. While the organization offers a range of services to help people build independent lives, this article will focus specifically on its innovative efforts in housing, employment training, and community engagement.

One area where CAU’s pioneering efforts are clearly evident is in affordable housing. At 70 West Grand Street, CAU provides 29 units of affordable housing, including studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments for individuals with disabilities and low-income persons. The building features amenities such as a media room, home theatre, and fitness center that encourage wellbeing and social connection.

In Cranford, CAU has developed a state-of-the-art Smart Home designed to support the safe and independent living of four residents. This innovative home is equipped with advanced technology, including a key scan access system. Additionally, the home features a comprehensive security system integrated with smart lighting.

The organization also operates three emergency residential homes that can serve up to 12 individuals who require immediate support. Additionally, two new medical homes are under construction, designed to help individuals transition from nursing facilities and other qualified institutions back into the community, providing targeted support for community reintegration.

CAU is also committed to building stronger ties with the broader community. This year, the organization invested in the historic Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway. The CAU Community Players, an inclusive theatre troupe founded in 2011, presented The Lion King Jr. across three performances in July. The production brings together performers of all abilities in celebration of talent, teamwork, and inclusion.

Every year, CAU hosts the Ira Geller Family Fun Day at Warinanco Park. The event returned this past September and welcomed the public to enjoy a day of music, food, games, and entertainment for all ages. This event celebrates community spirit and raises support for CAU’s vital programs.

The organization spearheads the Union County Interfaith Coordinating Council (UCICC) which facilitates regular interfaith meetings between various religious groups. Annual events include the Day of Prayer and the Homeless Persons Vigil. Join us for The Day of Prayer on Wednesday, November 19th at time at place and the Homeless Persons Vigil on day at time at place.
Community Access Unlimited continues to be a powerful force for inclusion and independence. Through affordable housing, job training, and community connections, CAU is helping people live fuller, more independent lives. Its impact can be seen not only in the individuals it serves, but also in the more inclusive and supportive communities it creates.
