Young Swimmers Shine at the Inaugural Devilfish Classic Junior Meet
The Westfield Area YMCA Devilfish Swim Team recently hosted its first-everDevilfish Classic Junior meet, a new event designed to introduce the team’s youngest swimmers — those in the 8-and-under age group as well as participants from the Angelfish and Preteam programs — to the excitement of competition.
For many of these swimmers, it was their first time racing in a competition. And even though there were some initial jitters, the swimmers expressed at the end of the meet that it had been a fantastic experience. In addition, Coach Fred noted that each and every swimmer had a best time recorded for the event.
The meet’s success was made possible by the outstanding efforts of the team’s older athletes.

More than 25 Devilfish swimmers, ages 13 and over, volunteered to help run the event. These teens took on key responsibilities including marshaling, timing, distributing awards and cheering on the younger competitors throughout the day.
“The older swimmers really embodied what it means to be part of the Devilfish team,” said Head Coach Meg Myers. “Their leadership, enthusiasm, and willingness to help created such a positive and supportive atmosphere.”
Thanks to their teamwork and dedication, the event ran seamlessly and provided an enjoyable experience for both swimmers and spectators. The Devilfish Classic Junior is expected to become an annual tradition, celebrating the program’s youngest members while fostering the sense of community and mentorship that defines the Westfield Area Y Devilfish Swim Team. The team now looks forward to an exciting year ahead as it continues to build on this spirit of teamwork and growth.
