Beyond Barriers: Exploring Community Access Unlimited’s Impact. Part 2
Community Access Unlimited (CAU) provides a wide range of services that empower individuals with disabilities and youth at risk to build healthier, more independent, and fulfilling lives. While CAU supports individuals across many aspects of life, this article highlights three essential parts of our continuum of care: group homes, nursing, and behavioral services. Together, these programs reflect CAU’s commitment to delivering coordinated, high-quality supports that promote safety, well-being, and long-term success.

As the foundation of CAU’s continuum of care, our residential programs serve a little less than 300 persons through supervised apartments and group home settings, each designed to provide personalized support that meets individual needs and preferences. Daily routines are individualized, with staff working closely alongside individuals with disabilities to build structured, goal-oriented environments that reflect their interests and foster independence. Support includes assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as hygiene, meal preparation, and medication management, tailored to each person’s specific needs. Beyond the home, individuals are encouraged to connect with the community through a wide range of opportunities, from employment and fitness programs to karate and art classes, outings to beaches, aquariums, golf courses, and restaurants, and even overnight trips. With a strong emphasis on community integration, CAU’s residential programs ensure that individuals not only receive the care they need but also enjoy meaningful experiences that support their growth and independence.
Building on this residential foundation, CAU’s Quality Assurance nursing team provides medical oversight and care across approximately 65 programs, including group homes, CAU’s Day Program, and two medical homes offering 24-hour nursing support. Our dedicated team consists of 18 nurses who collectively ensure high-quality, continuous care for the individual’s CAU supports, located in Union County. Nurses review complex medical files, administer treatments and injections, provide training, and coordinate with doctors and pharmacies. One individual we support, diagnosed with a chronic disease at a young age, benefits from tailored support and staff training. She explained, “The nurses are very nice to me, they are very kind. They give me my medicines, they check my blood sugar and treat me, they take care of me, when I’m sick, they give me something for the pain, and I just want to say thank you.” Testimonials like this highlight how CAU’s skilled nurses improve the health, safety, and quality of life of individuals with disabilities.
Complementing both residential supports, CAU’s behavioral services help individuals build positive behaviors, independence, and long-term success through person- centered care. As a DDD-approved provider for tiers A-Ea, CAU delivers compassionate, customized care for even the most complex behavioral needs, helping individuals with disabilities thrive at home and in the community. We provide in-home, community-based, and virtual support, offering assessments, behavioral support plans, therapy, caregiver training, and ongoing monitoring. Our expert team of three Board-Certified Behavioral Analysts (BCBAs), one Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and one Licensed Social Worker (LSW) use evidence-based strategies like counseling, incentive plans, and hands-on activities to strengthen communication, coping, socialization, and daily living skills.
