Finding Space to Breathe

Wellness in Nature at Reeves-Reed Arboretum

In a world that often feels increasingly busy and fast-paced, finding time to slow down can be a challenge. Sometimes, the simplest way to reset is to step outside—to breathe fresh air, notice the changing seasons, listen to birds singing, or simply take a walk without having anywhere else to be.

At Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit, wellness begins with nature. Across 13.5 acres of gardens, woodlands, and winding paths, visitors have opportunities to pause, breathe deeply, move their bodies, engage their senses, explore their creativity, and simply spend time surrounded by the natural world.
“Wellness can mean different things to different people. At Reeves-Reed Arboretum, we want to create opportunities for people to slow down, find joy, and discover what helps them feel their best—whether that’s through movement, creativity, mindfulness, or simply spending time outdoors,” says Jackie Kondel, Executive Director of Reeves-Reed Arboretum.

Rooted in Wellness

This fall, the Arboretum is bringing that philosophy to life in a new way with its inaugural Rooted in Wellness Retreat + Fair, taking place September 25–26. The two-day experience celebrates the many dimensions of well-being, from intentional time for yourself to discovering new practices, creative outlets, products, and people within the community.
On Friday, September 25, the Rooted in Wellness Retreat will offer a day designed to create space for slowing down, reflection, movement, and personal well-being. Participants will engage in a variety of wellness experiences with opportunities to move, practice mindfulness, learn, and simply take time for themselves. The intimate retreat format encourages participants to step away from everyday routines and spend a day immersed in experiences that nourish the mind and body.
On Saturday, September 26, the experience opens to the broader community with the Rooted in Wellness Fair, a community event featuring a curated marketplace of wellness-focused vendors, local businesses, practitioners, and organizations. Visitors can explore products and services centered on healthy living, creativity, movement, and self-care, while enjoying the Arboretum’s gardens and participating in a full day of complimentary activities designed to inspire well-being.
Set among trees, flowers, and winding paths, the event is designed to be as much about the setting as the programming. After all, there may be no better backdrop for a conversation about wellness than being outdoors, surrounded by nature.

Wellness Beyond the Event

While Rooted in Wellness provides a special opportunity for the community to gather around the theme of well-being, the Arboretum’s approach to wellness extends far beyond a single weekend.
One of Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s ongoing wellness offerings is Forest Bathing, also known as Nature and Forest Therapy. Unlike a traditional hike, Forest Bathing is intentionally slow and non-athletic. Participants are guided through the landscape using their senses—observing, listening, touching, and taking in their surroundings without focusing on reaching a destination.
The Arboretum offers Forest Bathing experiences throughout the year, providing opportunities to experience nature during different seasons while intentionally making space for quiet, reflection, and connection.

“Perhaps that is one of nature’s greatest gifts: it gives us space to slow down and breathe without asking us to do anything at all.”

Creativity is another important part of the Arboretum’s wellness experience. Art workshops and creative programs invite visitors to slow down, focus on the present moment, and make something with their own hands. Whether painting, drawing, or exploring a new artistic technique, the creative process can offer a welcome break from the pace and distractions of everyday life.
The Arboretum’s ongoing art exhibitions also invite visitors to experience nature from a unique perspective. Art and nature come together throughout the grounds and in the Wisner House gallery, where rotating exhibitions provide inspiration and encourage visitors to see the natural world in new ways.
There is no single definition of wellness—and no single way to experience it.
For some, wellness may be a mindful walk among the trees. For others, it might be moving through a yoga class, trying a new creative practice, watching, and learning about birds, or connecting with others in the community. Even the simplest moments can have value: watching a pollinator move from flower to flower can invite curiosity and mindfulness; sitting beneath a tree can offer a chance to be still; a walk through the gardens can provide a welcome pause in the middle of a busy day.
Perhaps that is one of nature’s greatest gifts: it gives us space to slow down and breathe without asking us to do anything at all.
