Can you provide a bit of history about the club and its efforts? Here include what organizations the club aids and also include anything you may do outside of the club for volunteer work.
Key club is an international organization that was founded back in 1925. It partners with the parent organization, Kiwanis international, to implement creative ways to provide community service. Key club has been a club at Westfield High School for the past few years, but since Covid the organization had some trouble organizing, so we are basically starting over again this year. Our club, however, aims at providing aid to those in need through our community service, hosting of drives, and being active participants within the community.
How long have you been in this club/ volunteering in general?
I have been with this organization since freshman year, but only became President this year.
What drew you to be part of this group?
I was drawn to this group due to the opportunities it provides to get involved in community service. There are other service clubs at WHS, but none are internationally tied or have a parent organization, so I knew when joining this club I would be part of something that really makes a difference.
What types of activities does the club do?
The WHS Key Club runs food, toy, and clothing drives, as well as assists with events and volunteers at places such as food kitchens. Our aim is to spread positivity throughout the community, which we have been able to do in the years prior to Covid, through our active club participation. This is something we are striving to regain this year with the club’s resurgence.
What are your responsibilities in the club/ other volunteer efforts?
My responsibilities in the club are to organize events and communicate with our members. As the club’s President, this year I am seeking to organize more fundraisers than years prior in order to gain active members. Our most recent event was writing cards to veterans which was a really fun drive to organize. Through this drive we were able to provide cards to a veteran home nearby, thanking them personally for their service.
Tell us about any recent fundraisers/ club events you’ve been a part of.
Our club is struggling with recruiting members because of the lack of activity last year. So other than the veteran card club meeting, this year we have been focusing more on gaining active members within the club to be able to do bigger fundraisers/ drives.
How can the community help your efforts?
Getting involved with us is pretty easy. We have a google classroom you can join or you can reach out to me, Mr. Gironda who is our advisor, or Natalie Fitzgerald who is the Vice President. Individuals outside of high school could also help by donating to drives we host and getting the word out about our club at WHS and its mission to aid those in need.
