VACNJ Opens Exhibition at Overlook Medical Center Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey recently opened the new show Viva La Cultura: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage at the Overlook Medical Center in Summit, showcasing the photographic work of artists Deborah Guzman Meyer and Nancy Ori. This show will be on view through November.

Deborah Guzman Meyer’s series New Americans documents the physical appearance of people new to America and examines what our innate reactions are, as humans, to encountering these individuals. The children that appear in these photographs are all biracial. They are photographed at a tender age — between two and ten — and at a time when they themselves have not begun the process of identifying themselves more with one race than another. The photographs are printed on fabric and embroidered by hand.

The body of work presented by photographer Nancy Ori was taken during her time spent teaching in Cuba. She was able to immerse herself in the country’s rich culture while photographing its communities, farms, architecture, and landscape. Although she is a traditional landscape and architecture photographer, in Cuba she became a street photographer, shooting the farms in the valley of Vinales, the colorful town of Trinidad, Havana on the eastern part of the island, and Santiago.

In addition to the work on display, Overlook Medical Center will host a celebration on Tuesday, October 10 in the center’s Bouras Auditorium. This program will highlight the exhibition and feature the exhibiting artists speaking about their work as well as Overlook staff, nurses, and doctors presenting their own stories.
