May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Since 1949, May has been designated as Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s impossible to talk about health and wellness without mentioning mental health. Nearly one in every five adults in the United States suffers from a mental illness or a mental health condition. That equates to nearly 52 million people.
However, mental health is more than just whether or not you have a mental illness. All aspects of our lives influence our well-being, which in turn influences how we experience life, work, and time with our loved ones. The discussion is now more important than ever. According to BetterUp’s research, more than 55% of adults were not mentally ill, but they were also not thriving. As the pandemic has thrust physical health to unprecedented prominence, it is time to consider the other major components of well-being. The conversation about mental health has never been more public, prevalent, or important. After all, raising awareness is an essential component of learning how to care for your mental health. As a community, we must be aware of the seriousness of mental health issues. May be the month to remind you of mental health and how to help yourself and others struggling.
