The Garden Club of Westfield has selected the lovely pollinator garden of Debora Bresch and Michael Carlucci at 730 Castleman Drive as their August Garden of the Month. This outstanding garden is designed to attract birds, butterflies, and bees so that these pollinators can not only find food for themselves but also help plants produce seeds and propagate.<\/p>\n
Ms. Bresch chose this type of garden \u201cto connect with nature and be surrounded by animal life,\u201d and she is \u201cgrateful that she can provide a way station for pollinators.\u201d<\/p>\n
In eliminating grass from the front lawn, there is now ample room for a large variety of perennials that not only provide an attractive and serene setting, but also create interest from their diversity of color, shape, and size. There is enough space between the plants so that one can wander through the garden and enjoy the fascinating qualities of each plant.<\/p>\n
A palette of colors is on display with the pinks of coneflowers and wild bergamot, yellows of coreopsis and yarrow, blues of Stokes\u2019 asters and great blue lobelias, purple veronica, red bee balm and silvery lamb\u2019s ears. Fragrance is provided by mountain mint, anise hyssop and bee balm. Spiky-shaped plants such as grasses, speedwell and amsonia contrast with rounded forms such as coreopsis, summer alliums and coneflowers. Its interesting components combine to create a garden that is a delight to the eye.<\/p>\n
