When residents gathered at Soldiers Memorial Field recently for National Night Out and the rescheduled Fourth of July fireworks display, they returned to a place that has been at the center of Summit\u2019s community life for more than a century.<\/em><\/p>\n

For Summit High School rising junior Cameron Aronson, the field is more than a recreation area. Aronson has spent countless hours there with family and friends, playing baseball and celebrating special events.<\/p>\n

\nAronson recently shared the history of Soldiers Memorial Field with the Summit Common Council during its \u201cHistorical Minute,\u201d explaining how the park evolved from a tribute to local veterans into one of the city\u2019s most important spaces for recreation, sports and community gatherings.
\n\u201cWhile it was originally created to honor the brave men and women who served our country, it has become the site of some of the most important green spaces, sports fields, and recreation centers in our community,\u201d Aronson said.
\nAronson\u2019s presentation came as Summit prepares for National Night Out, an annual event that brings residents together with police officers, first responders and community organizations.
\nThe event will also include the fireworks display that was canceled on July 4 because of severe weather.
\nBefore introducing Aronson, Councilwoman Chantal Landman reminded residents that the Council approved $200,000 for improvements at Memorial Playground, noting the city recently conducted a survey asking residents how those funds should be used.<\/p>\n

Aronson explained that Soldiers Memorial Field was established in the early 1900s following World War I as a living memorial to local veterans.
\n\u201cCommunity members wanted a place where people could remember the sacrifices of those who served while also building something that would benefit future generations. Instead of simply creating a monument, they created a space where people could gather, stay active and build friendships,\u201d he said.
\nOver the years, Aronson said, additional memorials were added honoring Summit residents who served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and more recent conflicts.<\/p>\n\n

Today, he explained, Soldiers Memorial Field serves as a hub for Summit athletics and recreation, featuring baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, a running track and open green spaces used throughout the year.
\n\u201cAs a former baseball player, I have many memories of playing games on the baseball field for traveling rec teams, as well as running multiple trips around the track during Coach Horn\u2019s practices whenever the team would mess up,\u201d Aronson said.
\nBeyond sports, Aronson noted that the park provides walking paths, playgrounds, picnic areas and green spaces that encourage outdoor activity and contribute to Summit\u2019s quality of life.
\nThe field also remains the site of important community traditions, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. Aronson noted that the original purpose of the park \u2014 honoring those who served \u2014 has never been forgotten.
\n\u201cSoldiers Memorial Field is much more than a park,\u201d Aronson said. \u201cIt is where Summit\u2019s history is honored, where young athletes grow, and where the community comes together.\u201d
\nAs residents gather Tuesday night, they will continue a tradition that began more than 100 years ago \u2014 honoring the past while creating new memories for future generations.<\/p>\n
